What is Diaspora Demo?

Diaspora Demo started as a platform to expose amazing founders tackling key challenges for Africans and Africans in the diaspora. As we’ve evolved, we began to focus more on supporting founders and being a launching pad for amazing companies. By providing key resources like a solid network, mentors, legal, technology support, and perks with from our corporate partners, Diaspora Demo has become an important milestone for many companies on their journey to building a great company.

What does Diaspora Demo look like this year?

This year, we’ll be selecting 7 companies and focusing on a one week immersive program. All participants will be housed at the tiphub house (Rented property) and we’ll be visiting key partners, investors, and stakeholders based in the DMV area.

Am I eligible?

Diaspora Demo is open to all persons who are 18 years or older with a technology enabled company based in, focused on or with one or more founders from the continent of Africa, the African Diaspora or of African descent. Applicants may only submit one application per year. To apply, visit tiphub’s online application, the startup (“Startup”) must adhere to the following criteria to apply:

  • The Startup must have been launched within the last 2 years
  • If the Startup has received external funding, it can only be up to USD 0.5m
  • The Startup must have a demonstrable product or service (Minimum Viable Product, MVP)
  • The founders of the Startup must be prepared to talk about it in public
  • Pitch and application documents must be in English or you must provide a translation
  • The Startup must be in the following sectors: Health, Education/Job Preparedness, Smart Energy, Logistics, Fintech, Agritech or enabling more efficient commerce for SMEs. We are also interested in how companies are leveraging emerging technology like blockchain, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, etc.

When am I required to be in Washington DC?

Based on our schedule of programming, companies will need to be in Washington DC November 5 th- November 11 th. The 6th is when we begin the one-week residency programming and prep for Diaspora Demo. We’ll have accommodations set up for November 5th – November 11th

I need a visa letter. Who should I reach out to?

If selected, you should reach out to Chika Umeadi @ chika@tiphub.org. You should be working on this as soon as possible if its needed.

What is the pitch format?

This year, we’re more focused on getting one on one and informal conversation going with key stakeholders. Instead of audience based demo activity, we’ll have dinners, meetings, and other opportunities to “soft pitch” interested parties.

Will there be press coverage for the week?

Yes, will be announcing as we get closer to the week.

How will the information on the Due Diligence form be used from here on out?

All information provided will be kept in confidence, however, the tiphub team, in order to
facilitate potential investor interests and third party contractor reference documentation may share the documents provided with potential investors, donors or grant makers and third party contractors that will provide, legal, business or technical advice.

What is the agenda for the program and the week?

Once selected, you’ll get access to our content library, legal, product and technology support, access to our community and perks from our corporate partners. You’ll be responsible for getting to DC (we are currently working on sponsorships for international flights)

Once in DC, each day has a theme and within the day, we’ll take meetings, have conversations, speakers and sessions around each topic. Each day includes, exercise, meals, meetings, mixers, discussions and other events.

Is the legal consultation mandatory and what is the cost?

No, however Diaspora Demo organizers strongly encourage the use of counsel to ensure investment readiness and to negotiate potential investment structures suited for impact investors despite the possible presence of existing counsel. The legal services are being offered free of charge.

Can we invite our supporters?

Yes, we’ll have private events that you’ll be able to invite supporters too.
